In America, south and north, distances are bigger than in Europe.
Chile extents over about 4000 km from Arica to Punta Arenas.
The very good roads and means of transportation allow for comfortable and affordable travel on the main axis, the No5 from north to south.
Pucon, although situated about 600 km south of the capital Santiago, is easily reached by plane or bus.

From Santiago you reach Pucon within 1,5 hours directly by plane or quietly sleeping on a comfortable, overnight bus.
Coming in Directly by Plane:
LAN often has cheap packages if you fly into Chile through them.
In the summer months LAN offers direct flights from Santiago to Pucon.
Otherwise the next airport that can be reached all year round is Temuco.
Sky only flys Santiago - Temuco.
From Temuco you must take an airport transfer or a public bus to Pucon.

Santiago - Pucon Airport: 1,5 hours
Santiago - Temuco - Transfer Pucon:3 hours
Santiago - Temuco - Public bus to Pucon:4 hours
Coming in by plane to Santiago and heading on by bus :
Those who prefer to fly in to Santiago and go on by bus can take a transfer from the Airport exit directly to the bus station where the overnight buses to Pucon depart. This is easy to manage even without speaking much Spanish.
Most of the buses that drive directly from Santiago to Pucon do so overnight in about 11 hours. There are different classes offered (price and comfort). For example, at one of the bigger companies, TUR Bus the Semi - Cama and Cama seats are quite comfy.
As the main road leads though the central valley, there is not much to miss on the ride and so offers prime sleeping time (you will pass mostly plantations and industrial towns).
There are also buses that leave during the day.
Unfortunately in order to book online, the passenger must own a Chilean issues bank card. However it is easy to make your bookings in person the day of your trip.

Travelling from Santiago by train
The Chilean Railway Company EFE currently only rides so far as the town of Chillan, from there on you have to take a bus to Pucon. As the trains are not very reliable and the scenic sleeping wagons are from early last century, there is not much reason for using the train.
Duration: Santiago - Chillan by train: 4,5 hours + Chillan - Pucon by bus: 6 hours (total 10,5 hours)
