Advancing in you language skills

We focus on 1:1 or 1:2 (for couples) classes; Most of our students are travelers that want to learn as much as possible in short time and this is the way to adjust learning velocity and items to be taught to your individual abilities and previous knowledge. At first sight 1:1 classes apear more cost intensive than group classes. Only “at first sight” because the advances a student makes in 1:1 are much faster than in group courses and in the end you pay for a certain “amount” of knowledge obtained rather than time spent in a classroom.

On your first day of classes your teacher will make an evaluation of the knowledge you already have and according to this combine the material for the coming lessons. In group lessons, let’s say you finished A2, you will be put in a B1 class and run through the material of B1. In individual classes we can completely ajust the material to your level of knowledge and at any moment we could go back and repass any specific item of A2 you still may struggle with.

Group classes have their benefits when you are just starting language studies - where you learn a lot of grammar - but as soon as it comes to interaction, 1:1 clearly gains. Therefore our combined programs Santiago - Pucon usually start wit group lessons in Santiago to get the basics, followed by 1:1 in Pucon to learn more profund.

In 1:1, if you split 50-50 between listening and speaking, in 60 minutes of 1:1 you would talk 30 minutes.
In a 6 students environment - tipically marked as small group - applying these parameters: in a 60 minutes class your active time is reduced to 5 minutes.
...of course in real class-life you might speak more or less- according your level and the topic of todays class.

As many other schools we refer in our teaching goals to the CERF, the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. It describes the 6 stages of mastering a new language describing the use you are able to make of the language.

To give you an idea what you can expect from 1:1 classes (which of course depends on your individual pre-condition: learning ability, previous language experience etc.): to measure the advances we generally use the CEFR standards; You achieve A1 level after 1 week of 1:1 classes: You achieve A2 level after another week of 1:1 classes: To achieve B1 and B2 it takes 2-3 weeks each level in 1:1 classes.

A rough estimation is that we obtain the results that is estimated for 4-6 weeks of studies in group classes in as much as 2 weeks of 1:1 teaching.

The homestay we offer is part of the studies, a family pension. For this reason our families for example don’t receive more than one guest at a time (exception couples). Homestay should help you to immerse more in the language and culture, practicing what you have learned at school in real life (instead of speaking Spanish just at school and than English with the other travellers in your hostel) and is proven to be a very helpful instrument to speed up the learning process. As the families should make you part of their daily life, and meals are an important part of it we offer Homestay only as full board.
